Hi, my name is Shelby Carr. I caught the bug for having my own business in the late ’70s. Back then, my interest was in mail order. I never really got started with it because of the mailing expenses and the fact that I didn’t exactly know what I wanted to sell.

I got into the internet really heavy in 1996. My first product purchase was for Fran Kern’s “Internet Marketing Empires”. However, because of technical difficulties, I never even started it. After that, even though I was on the internet every day after work until bedtime, I was only surfing and playing games. Slingo was my game of choice then.

In November of 2000, two days before Thanksgiving, I was laid-off from my job as a bookkeeper for a new car dealership. And from 2000 through 2007, I was laid-off from seven different jobs, all due to the economy. Including, one company that went out of business. You would think a bookkeeper would have a more secure position within a company, wouldn’t you? Let me tell you, as a single mother, that was devastating. Thank God for unemployment benefits or I would have never made it. Not only that, but I lost my self confidence and began to doubt my abilities. Heck, my career as a bookkeeper was 27 years long. Yes, bookkeepers are a necessity in any business, but because of the economy, companies were going for younger people for less money than for experience.

My Internet Marketing career came quite by accident, really. In December of 2004, I received an email with an invitation to Henry Gold’s 117christmasgifts giveaway. I thought it was great that I could get software products, information ebooks, etc. for nothing. I was thrilled. I thought I’d hit the jackpot. Then I was invited to Mark Hendrick’s 12daysofchristmas giveaway. Oh boy! More free software, ebook information, etc. Of course, I downloaded everything I could. After the holidays, I began wondering what I was going to do with all that stuff. I began to pay more attention to the emails from marketers that I received. I was actually reading the emails. Not for the products that they were selling, but for the way they were selling them. I caught the bug. I wanted to be an Internet Marketer. I thought it was my ticket to financial freedom. After all, that was what the marketers were telling me I could do. And, if they could do it, then so could I.

However, I made the biggest mistake a marketer could make, only at the time I didn’t know it was the biggest mistake. So, what did I do? I bought a list of 12,000 email addresses. I didn’t know that the list wasn’t a valid list. I didn’t know that I didn’t really have permission to send them an email. I didn’t know that, in order to have a genuine mailing list, they had to actually give you permission to email them or you would be a spammer. I didn’t know that to have permission from a person, they would have to optin to your list twice for you not to be considered a spammer.

What really started me on my path as an Internet Marketer was when I received an invitation to be a JV partner for Brad Smith’s Easter giveaway. That is when I started to build my own permission based list. How did I do? Well, from April to the end of that year I profited over $10,000. Now you might not think that is so much and you may be right. However, I did that without a mentor, coach or even an Internet Marketing friend for guidance, part-time and without any technical knowledge at all. I taught myself how to do html, how to create a squeeze page, and how to drive traffic. Maybe if I had a mentor, coach or someone to advise me I could have made more. But the main thing I did was I TOOK ACTION! Not only did I take action on my own business, I made money doing it.

For the past 3 years I have been a virtual assistant to Henry Gold and Gina Gaudio-Graves, which didn’t leave me much time to pursue my own business. Although, I have learned a lot from these successful people, I decided that I need to be on my own. And that is where I am today.

I am a professional Internet Marketer determined to help others succeed online. I live and breathe Internet Marketing and I love talking about it to people wherever I go. I am a single mother of two great kids and grandmother to a beautiful granddaughter. I live in Knoxville, Tennessee in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains.
