The time has come; you’ve decided to start your own online business!
But where do you start?
Regardless of whether you have your own product or are promoting someone else’s the first place to start is by choosing your field or market. The narrower the field, the more targeted your customers will be.
Many gurus recommend starting with an area that you already have an interest in. This is because you will be spending a lot of time at the beginning of your project learning the ropes, if you already have an interest, then you have a leg up on the competition by lessening your initial learning curve.
For the sake of this article we will choose the topic of cooking. As you can see this is a very broad topic. To narrow it down or find a niche you want to start out by researching a list of keywords.
Example: Home cooking, German cooking, Asian cooking, cooking tools, cookbooks, cookware, etc.
Once you have a list of words that narrow down your main topic you need to determine which ones will make you the most money. That is the purpose of business, after all.
The first thing you need to know is how often Internet users search each keyword; this tells you the popularity of the keyword. Next you determine how many web pages already fill the niche.
Finding a keyword that gets a lot of searches but has a low number of web pages already in the market is the best way to choose a niche that will make you money.
The final step to choosing your niche depends on your competition, the web pages that are already serving the market. Take the time to research what is already offered, follow their links and check out what each is offering.
To succeed in the niche, you will need to find a unique angle that will make your business valuable. If everyone else is selling the same cookbook, for example, creating your own would give your business a product that can’t be found anywhere else.
Niche marketing is a way to target a particular group of customers. If you want more information about this subject, consider Teri Champigny’s “Short and Simple Guide to Finding Profitable Niches”. Hello Shelby,
Thanks for the informative post. Teri’s Guide is a great help in getting past
some of the hurdles of starting your Internet Marketing Biz by focusing on,
as you said, not just a niche, but a profitable one.
Sprinkle in a bit of imagination and a never-give-up attitude and you have
yourself a winning combination.
Thanks again Shelby for the post.
